Langdon viewed the world as a web of profoundly intertwined histories and events. The connections may be invisible, he often preached to his symbology classes at Harvard, but they are always there, buried just beneath the surface.

It was a loaded question, of course. Admitting you liked the pyramid made you a tasteless American, and expressing dislike was an insult to the French.

"Symbols carry different meanings in different settings,"

Still, the memories haunted his soul.

Money and faith were powerful motivators.

Are your interests in the church more architectural or historical?"

"Actually, Sister, my interests are spiritual."

Prayer is a solitary joy.

For centuries, the symbol of the Rose had been associated with maps and guiding souls in the proper direction.

Now, as if by the will of God, the solution had presented itself.

Langdon heard only the faint murmur of her voice. He wasn't going anywhere. He was lost in another place now. A place where ancient secrets rose to the surface. A place where forgotten histories emerged from the shadows.

A career hazard of symbologists was a tendency to extract hidden meaning from situations that had none.

Freedom is expensive.

"The Bible is a product of man, my dear. Not of God. The Bible did not fall magically from the clouds. Man created it as a historical record of tumultuous times, and it has evolved through countless translations, additions, and revisions. History has never had a definitive version of the book."

"Jesus Christ was a historical figure of staggering influence, perhaps the most enigmatic and inspirational leader the world has ever seen.

"The Rose has always been the premiere symbol of female sexuality. In primitive goddess cults, the five petals represented the five stations of female life—birth, menstruation, motherhood, menopause, and death.

"Meaning that history is always written by the winners. When two cultures clash, the loser is obliterated, and the winner writes the history books—books which glorify their own cause and disparage the conquered foe. As Napoleon once said, 'What is history, but a fable agreed upon?' "

He smiled. "By its very nature, history is always a one-sided account."

"In my experience," Teabing said, "men go to far greater lengths to avoid what they fear than to obtain what they desire.

Men of privilege always felt like they were above the law.

Stepping across the threshold into Westminster Abbey, Langdon felt the outside world evaporate with a sudden hush. No rumble of traffic. No hiss of rain. Just a deafening silence, which seemed to reverberate back and forth as if the building were whispering to itself.

"The Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away."

"Forgiveness is God's greatest gift."

When a question has no correct answer, there is only one honest response.

The gray area between yes and no.

Silence.

All the while buying time to think.

Gazing out at the rustling trees of College Garden, Langdon sensed her playful presence. The signs were everywhere. Like a taunting silhouette emerging from the fog, the branches of Britain's oldest apple tree burgeoned with five-petaled blossoms, all glistening like Venus. The goddess was in the garden now. She was dancing in the rain, singing songs of the ages, peeking out from behind the bud-filled branches as if to remind Langdon that the fruit of knowledge was growing just beyond his reach.

"I suspect my path is as uncertain as yours."

"Yes." Fache paused. "I suspect I will be retiring early."

Aringarosa smiled. "A little faith can do wonders, Captain. A little faith."
