福尔摩斯探案全集---冒险史 - 兔灰灰 - 兔灰灰的小窝

In his eyes she eclipses and predominates the whole of her sex.

All emotions, and that one particularly, were abhorrent to his cold, precise but admirably balanced mind. He was, I take it, the most perfect reasoning and observing machine that the world has seen, but as a lover he would have placed himself in a false position.

You have not observed. And yet you have seen.

It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.

My life is spent in one long effort to escape from the commonplaces of existence. These little problems help me to do so.

Some ten or twelve, but none which present any feature of interest. They are important, you understand, without being interesting. Indeed, I have found that it is usually in unimportant matters that there is a field for the observation, and for the quick analysis of cause and effect which gives the charm to an investigation. The larger crimes are apt to be the simpler, for the bigger the crime the more obvious, as a rule, is the motive.

Never mind," said Holmes, laughing; "it is my business to know things. Perhaps I have trained myself to see what others overlook.

Not invisible but unnoticed, Watson. You did not know where to look, and so you missed all that was important.

It is true that you have missed everything of importance, but you have hit upon the method, and you have a quick eye for colour. Never trust to general impressions, my boy, but concentrate yourself upon details.

Singularity is almost invariably a clue. The more featureless and commonplace a crime is, the more difficult it is to bring it home.

All day the wind had screamed and the rain had beaten against the windows, so that even here in the heart of great, hand-made London we were forced to raise our minds for the instant from the routine of life and to recognize the presence of those great elemental forces which shriek at mankind through the bars of his civilization, like untamed beasts in a cage.

The ideal reasoner," he remarked, "would, when he had once been shown a single fact in all its bearings, deduce from it not only all the chain of events which led up to it but also all the results which would follow from it.

so the observer who has thoroughly understood one link in a series of incidents should be able to accurately state all the other ones, both before and after.

Holmes grinned at the last item. "Well," he said, "I say now, as I said then, that a man should keep his little brain-attic stocked with all the furniture that he is likely to use, and the rest he can put away in the lumber-room of his library, where he can get it if he wants it.

It was difficult to refuse any of Sherlock Holmes's requests, for they were always so exceedingly definite, and put forward with such a quiet air of mastery.

You have a grand gift of silence, Watson," said he. "It makes you quite invaluable as a companion.

A few country carts were stirring, bearing in vegetables to the metropolis, but the lines of villas on either side were as silent and lifeless as some city in a dream.

I confess that I have been as blind as a mole, but it is better to learn wisdom late than never to learn it at all.

Of course it is a nucleus and focus of crime. Every good stone is. They are the devil's pet baits. In the larger and older jewels every facet may stand for a bloody deed.

It is my business to know what other people don't know.

Besides, it is the season of forgiveness. Chance has put in our way a most singular and whimsical problem, and its solution is its own reward.

It was a perfect day, with a bright sun and a few fleecy clouds in the heavens. The trees and wayside hedges were just throwing out their first green shoots, and the air was full of the pleasant smell of the moist earth.

it's a wicked world, and when a clever man turns his brains to crime it is the worst of all.

When a doctor does go wrong he is the first of criminals. He has nerve and he has nowledge.

Capital! Between your brandy and your bandage, I feel a new man.

Absolute and complete silence before, during, and after? No reference to the matter at all, either in word or writing?

During that time she ran free in a mining camp and wandered through woods or mountains, so that her education has come from Nature rather than from the schoolmaster.

Lord St. Simon shook his head. "I am afraid that it will take wiser heads than yours or mine," he remarked, and bowing in a stately, old-fashioned manner he departed.

"It is very good of Lord St. Simon to honour my head by putting it on a level with his own," said Sherlock Holmes, laughing.

It is an old maxim of mine that when you have excluded the impossible, whatever remains, however improbable, must be the truth.

Crime is common. Logic is rare. Therefore it is upon the logic rather than upon the crime that you should dwell.

The point is, have you or have you not the bearing and deport- ment of a lady? There it is in a nutshell. If you have not, you are not fined for the rearing of a child who may some day play a considerable part in the history of the country.

It is the most lovely country, my dear young lady, and the dearest old country-house.

It was an ideal spring day, a light blue sky, flecked with little fleecy white clouds drifting across from west to east. The sun was shining very brightly, and yet there was an exhilarating nip in the air, which set an edge to a man's energy. All over the countryside, away to the rolling hills around Aldershot, the little red and gray roofs of the farm-steadings peeped out from amid the light green of the new foliage.
